Summer League
The penultimate game of the Summer League was away to Ashley; our Captain reported as follows:
On Tuesday night we travelled to Ashley, we knew it would be a tough night as they had not lost a
home game, even beating the mighty Withersfield 6 - 4. We battled hard taking a 4- 0 lead into the
break and were looking optimistic for a win. Ashley had other ideas and won both the pairs and the
shot score, 44 - 30, giving them a 6 - 4 victory. But all in all a good result for us.
Mat 1 fours
Irving, Jackie, Pete W and Pete J, went 5 - 0 down after 2 ends against Colin9s four,
but learnt the mat well and at 7 ends the scoreboard read 7 shots each, level with 3 ends to go.
Then taking a 4 and a 2 for 1 in return had a great result: a 13 - 8 win.
Mat 2 fours
Karen, Steve, Bob and Sue, were up against Alan9s four and dropped 3 on the first end. But took the
lead on the 6th end and never looked back, a close 9 - 7 win.
Mat 1 pairs
Jean and Richard were up against Ann and Daniel. Some extremely accurate bowling from Daniel,
never gave us a chance to get a foothold. A 20 - 2 loss.
Mat 2 prs
Keith and Andy had a close game against Pauline and David. Despite winning the same amount of
ends the bigger shot scores from the Ashley pairing resulted in a 9 - 6 loss.
The last match was at home to Ashley. In our Captain9s words:
Well the last game of the season ended in a draw, would have been nice to finish on a win, but to be
honest with you as far league finishing position goes, it makes no difference. We will have finished a
creditable 3rd place. The match played out as follows:
Mat 1 fours
Irving, Jackie, Pete W and Pete J, had the game of the night against David9s four.
Winning every end and finishing with a superb 24 - 0 win.
Mat 2 fours
Andrew, Karen, Bob and Sue, had a tough game against Chris9s four. They started well with a 7 - 1
lead after 3 ends but dropped too many in the middle games and it Wasn9t their night, which ended
with a 13 - 9 loss.
Mat 1 prs
Jean and Richard were up against Ann and the very accurate Daniel. They battled hard, but ended up
on the losing side, a 12 - 6 loss.
Mat 2 prs
Keith and Andy were playing Margaret and Colin in a very entertaining game to watch. The score
was going both ways and it finally ended in a fair 8 - 8 draw.
I have enjoyed being the captain of a great group of players. I can see improvements across the team
and determined faces when playing the tougher teams. Now we look forward to the Winter leagues.
At the clubs AGM Peter Winch was voted in as Team Captain with Kevin Fisk as Vice-Captain.
At the time of writing the Bury Winter League had started and Brockley had played one game away
to Haverhill. This was only the second time we had played this team at their venue, and we were still
getting to grips with the mats. The honours were shared in the first half Fours as were the second half
Pairs. Brockley were able to come away with a credible 6:4 win having scored more shots than
Haverhill.
