Brockley Carpet Bowls Club
The club is now partaking in the Suffolk Summer League which is a bit more easy going than the
Winter Leagues competitions. It is an opportunity for new and less experienced bowlers to try their
hand at competitive bowls. Our first match should have been against Lawshall but, unfortunately due
to lack of numbers, they had to withdraw from the Summer League. However Brockley invited them
to play a friendly which they duly did; out captain reports as follows:
We had a great start to the season with a warm up against Lawshall, We ran out 10-0 winners with a
63-17 shot advantage. The score makes it look like they were bad, but they played really well.
On Mat 1 Keith, Steve, Pete W & Pete J had a close game and were 6-2 down after 5 ends, but a 4 on
the next end left it level and ended with a 10-7 win.
On Mat 2 Bob, Karen, Irving & Sue were 3-2 down after 4 ends, but never lost another end and after
some great bowling and a 7 on end 9 ended up 19-3 winners.
In the second half on Mat 1Jean & Richard started well with some great bowling and never lost an
end until the 7th & ended up with a 16-3 win.
Whilst on Mat 2 Jackie & Andrew E shot off to a great start, especially with a 6 on end 3, more top
bowling put them up for an 18-4 win.
Next up was our first league game proper at home to Cockfield and it was back to earth with a bump.
Not the start we would have wanted for the season's first game. It ended with a 4-6 loss 38-40 shots,
going into the last 4 ends we were 8 shots up, but it wasn't to be. Hopefully we can do better against
Hundon this week. We just need the 4s to match the pairs.
On Mat 1 Keith, Gillian, Pete W and Pete J, had a bad start losing the first 5 ends to Steve's team.
But were much improved for the next 5, dropping 1 shot and ended with a 6-12 loss.
Mat 2 saw Bob, Karen, Irving and Sue have a slightly better game but struggled to make an impact
against Sarah's team. A 5-9 loss.
Second half on Mat 1 Jean and Richard started very well and were 15-2 up after 7 ends but
unfortunately dropped 9 shots on the last 3 ends. A good 15-11 win against Colin's team.
On Mat 2 Jackie and Andrew had a poor start against Jeremy's team dropping 4 shots in the first 2
ends, but a great 4 on end 3 made it level and they never looked back. Another good win 12-8.
A Bounce Back! We got our first win of the season against Hundon 8 - 2 and 48 - 24 shots. Well
played all! A resounding win which at the time of writing has put us in second place in the league.
On mat 1 Gillian, Bill, Pete W and Pete J started well against Kevin's 4 and were 4 up after 2 ends,
but dropped 4 on the next to even things up. Then went on to only drop 1 more, finished with a
13 - 5 win.
On mat 2 Sue, Karen, Bob and Andy were playing Ian's 4 and had a brilliant 5 on end 3. They carried
on adding shots including a 4 on end 6 to end up with a 14 - 5 win, only losing 3 ends route to
victory.
The pair of Jean and Richard had a great game with Ralph's 2 on mat 1. It included 2 fives to give
them the best result of the night, a 16 - 5 win.
Jackie and Andrew came up against the formidable Ellen who was on top form on mat 2 and
unfortunately had a 5 - 9 loss despite winning the last four ends.
The club are now holding Club / Practice nights on a Wednesday when we do not have a home
match. If you are interested in playing competitively, please come along and you will be made
most welcome. We are on the lookout for new players.
